1.6 Million Dollar Grant

Mount Airy City Schools (MACS) has received a 1.6 million dollar grant to support mathematics and leadership development for teachers.  The project is funded through a Mathematics and Science Partnership grant and will create a Mathematics and Leadership Institute by collaborating with The Piedmont Triad Educational Consortium (PTEC), Wake Forest University (WFU), The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas), and four other school districts.

The grant will provide needed training for 240 teachers over the course of three years in mathematics content, problem-based learning, project-based learning, and leadership development. One of the grant highlights will be Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) camps for students during the three-year implementation as well as coaching for teachers.

The district is excited about the incredible opportunities that the grant will provide to our teachers. Teachers will receive support from STEM faculty at world-class Institutes of Higher Education and experience nationally recognized leadership development from Dr. Larry Coble, Executive Director for PTEC.  Teachers from Mount Airy City Schools, Lexington City Schools, Alamance-Burlington Schools, Randolph County Schools and Davidson County Schools will be impacted by this amazing opportunity.  The teachers in MACS will become STEAM leaders and be able to provide sustainable trainings to other teachers throughout the region over the next several years.

Updated School Calendar
The winter of 2015 has proven to be a challenge with the limited flexibility of the school calendar. The Mount Airy City Schools Board of Education voted on Tuesday to modify the existing school calendar in order to preserve Spring Break and provide school officials with some options in the event of additional inclement weather.

As a result the Board voted to forgive three student days. The impact of this vote on the school calendar is as follows:

 May 25th, Memorial Day, becomes a regular school day

 June 11th is the Last Day of School

 June 12th is a Teacher Workday

The Board of Education recognizes the importance of Memorial Day so each campus will take time to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms on that day. In addition, this vote allowed the Board to maintain Good Friday as a holiday.

Mount Airy City Schools may use Saturday School if the district is faced with more bad weather in order to keep Spring Break intact.  If another major weather event takes place, the district may have little choice but to use Spring Break for make-up purposes. Thank you for your understanding as we make the best out of a tough situation.
