Board Approves Language Leaders

Tuesday, December 16, 2014 the Mount Airy City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to implement Language Leaders, a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, at Tharrington Primary School. The purpose of the program will be to deepen the district’s K-12 STEAM initiative by providing an opportunity for students to think critically and innovatively solve problems in two languages. The vote continues a state-wide trend of districts adopting DLI. With over 70 programs in the state, North Carolina is considered one of the nation’s leaders in implementing DLI.

Language Leaders will begin in the Fall of 2015 with the intent of adding one grade level per year. The district stressed that there will be limited seats available in the program and those interested must take a tour of Tharrington Primary School in order to be eligible. The registration window will open on February 9, 2015 and close at midnight on March 3, 2015. All interested applicants must be registered by midnight March 3, 2015 to be considered for the program. Once the registration window closes, all other applicants will be put on the wait list.

The district will host an Early Decision Night on January 13, 2015 at 6:00PM at Tharrington Primary School where parents can sign up for special tours ahead of the registration window. Everyone else is invited to the Parent Information Session on February 9, 2015 at 6:00PM at Tharrington Primary School.

Spelling Bee Competitions

It was another exciting year of spelling bee competition for students in Mount Airy City Schools! Jones Intermediate and Mount Airy Middle School held their school-wide bees in early December and students came prepared to battle. Third grade students kicked their bee off with an intense 16 round battle. Jones students totaled 42 rounds for their third, fourth, and fifth grade bees. Mount Airy Middle School did not disappoint and totaled 59 rounds for all three grade levels. Seventh graders enjoyed watching their peers go for 25 rounds before finally discovering who would be their winner and runner-up for the district bee in February. Congratulations to all participants for making it to the school bee! The winners listed below will be participating in the district bee on Thursday, February 5 at Mount Airy Middle School.

The PowerPoint from this meeting is linked here, in case you missed the meeting. CDM is an option that allows students to demonstrate mastery of a course's content, getting credit and a pass/fail grade for the course by taking an assessment and completing an artifact. This is being introduced by The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

The application window for CDM will open on December 9 and close January 20.

District of Distinction

District Administrator has named Mount Airy City Schools as one of its inaugural Districts of Distinction for its innovative work in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). District Administrator magazine is a national publication distributed to educational leaders around the country. The annual award was created to honor school districts that are leading the way with innovative ideas that improve student achievement and whose programs can be duplicated in other schools.

Dr. Greg Little stated, “We want our students to think critically, innovatively solve problems, be confident leaders and responsible citizens with a passion for learning.  In short we want to create innovators.  Our work with STEAM is designed to cultivate innovative thinking and social responsibility as students seek to make Mount Airy a better place to live.”

Mount Airy City Schools will be featured in the November issue of District Administrator magazine.
